North Metro TV

     

 

1. What year was your organization established?

The first franchises for the North Central Cable Communications Commission were official in September of 1983. The name was changed to the North Metro Telecommunications Commission in the mid-90s.  Public Access first started as a department of the cable company in 1986. The Cable Commission assumed operation of community TV in March 1997...and North Metro Television (NMTV) was officially born.

 

2. What city/cities does your organization serve?

We serve seven northern municipalities including Blaine, Centerville, Circle Pines, Ham Lake, Lexington, Lino Lakes and Spring Lake Park.

 

3. What is the approximate population of the area your organization serves?
The population of our seven cities is 114,300-ish.
4. What is the board/management structure?
The North Metro Telecommunications Commission is made up of elected officials from each of our Member Cities. Each municipality appoints a Commissioner and an alternate. Additionally, an Operations Committee comprised of the City Administrators from each Member City makes recommendations to the Commission regarding the operations of North Metro TV. 

5. How many full-time and part-time staff members?
We have 11 full-time employees, 2 part-timers, and a lot of free-lancers, interns and volunteers.

6. How many channels does your organization manage?
One staff channel, one public channel, two school district channels and seven city channels. We have both Comcast and CenturyLink. 

7. Do you have a fun fact or story about your organization?
  1. North Metro TV's highest viewed video on YouTube has more than 375,000 views.
  2. We completed our HD upgrade last year, including master control, two studios and our production truck!  
  3. We have a licensed drone operator/pilot on staff...and a really cool drone.
  4. We have an office puppy. It makes a big difference.
