Featured Facility - Town Square Television

1. What year was your organization established?
The Northern Dakota County Cable Communications Commission (“NDC4”) was founded in 1982, and the 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation Town Square Television* was formed in 1987.  (We are having a “Birthday Bash” on October 12, 2017, to celebrate our 30th and 35th birthdays!)
*Some MACTA members may remember that the non-profit’s original name was NDCTV, but we changed it to Town Square Television, because we were constantly confused with things like North Dakota, Dakota County, the NDC Chamber of Commerce, and NBC Television.

2. What city/cities does your organization serve?
We serve the seven cities on the north end of Dakota County (Inver Grove Heights, Lilydale, Mendota, Mendota Heights, South St. Paul, Sunfish Lake, and West St. Paul).

3. What is the approximate population of the area your organization serves?
Our population is about 90,000 people, or about 45,000 households.

4. What is the board/management structure?
We are blessed with two governing bodies:

    • The NDC4 Cable Commission is essentially the “parent organization,” and has 14 Commissioners, two from each of the seven cities.  Each city has one city council representative and one “citizen” representative who must be a resident of that city and appointed by that city council.  The NDC4 full commission meetings are televised live on cable and are available LIVE and on-demand at www.townsquare.tv.
    • Town Square Television has an 11-member Board of Directors made up of community leaders who are appointed through a combination of some NDC4 appointed seats, some elected at the annual meeting by the membership, and some recruited by the board itself.  The Board meets at least six times per year, and it has committees that work on specific projects.
5. How many full-time and part-time staff members?
The Executive Director works for both organizations and manages a combined staff of about 14 regular employees.  We are currently at 12.3 full-time equivalents, and we need to fill a couple of vacancies in the very near future.

We also use MANY independent contractors for on-camera talent and production crew positions, and we are fortunate to have MANY volunteers who make our operation possible.

6. How many channels does your organization manage?
We have seven cable channels now on Comcast and CenturyLink PrismTV, and we use Granicus and Vimeo for our online programming.

7. Do you have a fun fact or story about your organization?
Our current group of 13 employees’ average years of employment is 14.8 years:
    • 0-9 years - 4 employees
    • 10-19 years - 6 employees
    • 20-29 years - 3 employees
And we have two recent retirees who both had over 25 years of service.

8. Please list your organization's website and social media links.
